Voting Advice Applications are gamified and scientific survey tools that provide users with insight into salient issues, candidate/party positions, and their position displayed interactively in the ‘political landscape’.
Dutch Parliamentary Elections 2021
For the Dutch elections in March 2021, I have developed Kieskompas’s popular voting advice application. Aside from this, my colleagues and I have developed 3 thematic compasses, as well as an extra accessible compass aimed at people with disabilities and those who require assistance with voting. I have also constructed a conversational AI agent that can communicate party positions on a range of salient issues, as well as more generic information on the participating parties (platform, website, candidates…) and the election (COVID-19 measures, what we vote for…).
While I offered advice on the development of the 2023 Dutch VAA, all credit goes to my colleagues for this particular election.
US Presidential election
For the US Presidential Election, I have developed a popularized ‘Trump Meter’, which is disseminated in 8 countries and has collected 700,000 responses.
- Belgium: Flanders & Wallonia (disseminated by Flanders’ largest newspaper, HLN, and by 7sur7 in Wallonia)
- The Netherlands (disseminated by the country’s second largest newspaper, AD)
- Germany (disseminated by Jetzt.de, t-online.de, Stern.de, Der Westen, Nordbayern, Upday)
- France (disseminated by 20minutes)
- Denmark (disseminated by B.T.)
- Romania (disseminated by RFI Romania, Libertatea, Cluj24, Alba24)
- Bulgaria (disseminated by Haskovo, Blitz)
- USA
Some results:
- Dutch people agree on average for 30% with Trump and for 66% with Biden
- Nearly two thirds of Dutch people would vote for Biden
- The Flemish agree on average for 31% with Trump and for 64% with Biden
- 68% of Flemish people would vote for Biden, 14% for Trump
- The Danes agree least with Trump when it comes to ‘Media & Culture’, and most when it comes to ‘Economy & Taxes’
- What does the Danish Trump voter look like?
